Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. She was a night nurse, allowing her aunt the time she needed during the day for the love of art, literature and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used as an instrument for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was well-educated and encouraged that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's father recalled watching the famous civil rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring community of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay was a student at University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and obtained qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still in university. DuVernay was a journalist intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being tasked to observe the house that one of the members of the jury, and then examine their junk. The jury member was unhappy with her journalistic duties and decided that she would switch to the business of public relations. DuVernay was brought on straight out of college as a junior publicist at one of the smaller studios. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Aside from PR, her agency also established a range of lifestyle and promotional networks including those like the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
